Law and Odor

We are being told – with a straight face, no less – that things are progressing in Iraq. It’ll take time, but the Iraqis are taking control of their country, bit by bit. Look at the Saddam Hussein trial, we are told.

Well, let’s look at it. In particular, let’s look at a Reuters dispatch from Thursday, October 20, around 4:00 EDT.

(Reuters) - A lawyer for one of Saddam Hussein's co-defendants was kidnapped from his home on Thursday, a day after he sat in the dock next to the former president on the opening day of their trial for crimes against humanity.

His client is former judge Jawad al-Bander, a senior legal source involved in the trial told Reuters.

"Saadoun Janabi was kidnapped this evening around 8.30 p.m. (1730 GMT) from his office, which is also his home, in the Shaab district by eight armed men," the source said.

Police and Interior Ministry sources confirmed the kidnapping. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Meanwhile, Condi “I Ain’t A-Runnin’” Rice says well, yes, we might be in Iraq another ten years.

Yep. Things’re going great!

I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at. What? "Bad things happen to lawyers?" In the US, a lawyer's wife was found murdered. We've had more murders in the U.S. in just the past year than we have lost soldiers in three years of a war! So what are we supposed to do, pull our troops out of the US? We shouldn't be allowed to criticize lawyers now?

Yes, our murder rate is certainly something to be proud of. Infant mortality too. We've got one of the highest infant mortality rates of the developed nations. (Although, to be fair, it's astronomically higher in many developing countries.) Maybe if we can just push up that murder rate a little higher we can use it in recruiting posters: "Join the Army. It's safer than Detroit!"

BTW: Saddam Hussein is being tried for a crime he committed a year BEFORE he shook hands with Donald Rumsfield. Back when Saddam was fighting a war with Iran, we thought he was swell...or at least decided to look the other way during his more excessive bursts of boyish zeal.

Addendum:

And that was during the Reagan administration. I've been told he was the greatest president ever.

Yeah, but it's the people of Iraq that trying him. They can charge him with whatever they want.

Yes, and the tooth fairy really exists. And Iraqis are free to do whatever they want in their own country. Absolutely no pressure or influence from outside sources. And George W. Bush never said "He gassed his own people" over and over again as a justification for war, without qualifying the statement with "during a Republican administration, which did nothing about it 20 years ago when it happened -- and in fact gave him aid."

This is preaching to the choir. How about something new and different on this blog, Mikey? Bush bashing is just such a gimme.

I like Bush bashing.

Ihe man's such a complete ass, I've got to keep on raising the bar. This Iraqi lawyer story -- now it's a killing, by the way -- just vaulted over the top in my easily-offended little pea brain.

Damn, Marilyn. First you nix me'n'religion, then you nix me'n'Bush. Tom Delay's too easy -- I mean, hiring Alfred E. Neuman to pose for his mug shot! Got any suggestions?

And the animal rights stuff doesn't seem to generate much of a dialog.

The Rick 'n' Marilyn Show is fun, but maybe we should pick on Earl some more.

You could post movie reviews (hee hee). Seriously, I like stuff that's debatable, like do women have it better now than they ever have before? What will happen to New Orleans--will it be restored or gentrified? Is chocolate chip cookie dough Ben and Jerry's best flavor?

Posted by: Marilyn Ferdinand at October 21, 2005 12:29 PM

We have a resident conservative on Third Eye, too. It's no fun to pick on him anymore.

do women have it better now than they ever have before?

Write a guest editorial. And, unlike the video magazine days, I won't edit you.

What will happen to New Orleans--will it be restored or gentrified?

Yes. Of course. Why is that debatable?

Is chocolate chip cookie dough Ben and Jerry's best flavor?

Depends upon your chromosomes, I think.

Posted by: Mike Gold at October 21, 2005 12:35 PM

How do I post a guest editorial?

Either/or is a yes?

If it helps Mike, I believe that women should be barefoot when they're pregnant. They have to stay out of my kitchen though. They don't know how to cook.

"...unlike the video magazine days, I won't edit you."

But just like the video magazine days, don't expect to get paid. Or as the publisher would have said "The wire is in the mail."

Posted by: Rick Oliver at October 21, 2005 01:42 PM

I got paid, but I didn't get edited (much). I guess I was one of the lucky ones.

Posted by: Marilyn Ferdinand at October 21, 2005 02:37 PM

Mike used to make me sit there and listen as he read my articles out loud. Every time I cringed, he'd whip out the old editing pencil.

Video Action occasioned my first celebrity interviews (John Houseman and Johnny Morris)!
